Jolt Cola made a shocking and surprising return in 2017. It showed up at Dollar General locations across the US and now is available on Amazon. They inform us that it’ll get more widespread in 2018, so that will be a plus for Jolt fans. I happened to find them in Gulfport, Mississippi after searching long and hard at local Dollar General locations. After getting my hands on a can, I had to review it. I mean, I review gimmicky beverages all the time – this is my wheelhouse. Let’s discuss!
Packaging: The Jolt Cola reboot can is dripping with nostalgia. It is literally the same can you were able to get when it first sold in the mid-80s. It’s amazing in its simple design and intended to pop on the shelf as you see exactly what you expect out of Jolt. Throwing the old logo plus the slogan (All the sugar, twice the caffeine) on the packaging was a nice touch. It’s a great throwback design and I think it’ll impress fans of the classic cola.
Flavor/Composition: Have you ever had the most generic cola imaginable? Think about what it tastes like. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just not that great. That’s how Jolt tastes. It’s just…generic. It has nothing to really make it stand out from the crowd. It’s got an average amount of carbonation. It has a pretty average flavor to it. Have you drank store brand cola? You’ve tasted Jolt. However, it does have twice the caffeine! Does that change the flavor? Nope. Not even a little.
Conclusion: Do you like cola? Do you want more caffeine? Then go nuts and pick up some Jolt. At $1 a can at Dollar General, it’s worth trying out for the nostalgia factor and…the extra caffeine. Yet, once you get past the nostalgia and the excitement of finding something hard to find, it really is just generic tasting cola. That in and of itself is not inherently bad, it’s just…the way it is. I would recommend trying to find it in store over ordering on Amazon. I mean – it’s cheaper…plus the chase is half the fun in finding Jolt Cola.
