That’s the Wrong Context: Suggestions

Are there Bible verses that you commonly see people use out of context? Have you been bludgeoned by a Bible verse that a person was clearly misusing? Have you heard pop-culture icons using Bible verses to push their own view of Christianity? Does it drive you insane? Me too!

I’m looking to see some suggestions. What Bible verses that people use wrong drive you the craziest? Share them in the comments.

Here’s the ones I’ve highlighted so far:

Give me some suggestions below!

  1. I was just talking about Philippians 4:13 last Sunday at a Bible study I lead. That and Jeremiah 29:11 are the first ones that come to mind for me, too, on this topic! Also taken out of context a lot are Romans 8:28 and Mark 10:27. And Matthew 26:11 has to win the award for “Most Likely to be Misused in Improper Support of Political Ideology” 🙂

Excellent choices which deserve further discussion to fix commonly misused contexts! Thanks for the suggestions, Matt.

  2. This reminds me of in the Bible where Satan tried to tempt Jesus in the wilderness by using verses from the Bible such as making Him try to worship him or call Angels to save Him. Even the enemy will try to use the Bible. We got to be careful.

Absolutely. Out of context Bible use bugs me, which is why I started this series of posts. If you have any thoughts on blatantly badly used Bible verses, feel free to share them!

      • Thanks and I will. So shows that we need to be careful with people doing this. That is how the enemy manipulates us if you are not careful.
