Donald Trump is my enemy politically. Let that be very clear. I find him to be a menace to conservatism, to this nation, and to the Republican Party. His political views include big government support for universal healthcare, his past support for increased gun ownership restrictions, as well as his use of vile rhetoric on immigration make him a terrible standard bearer for the Republican Party. His unwillingness to boldly condemn the evil of the KKK and allow retweets from his Twitter account of white supremacists and self-avowed fascists make his judgement questionable at best and racist at worst. He has made clear he is not a Christian when he stated he does not repent as “he avoids making mistakes.” One of the most basic tenets of the Christian faith is the acknowledgement that we are imperfect sinners in need of a Savior. By continuing to claim to be a Christian, he is misrepresenting my faith and my Savior. Now, with all that in mind – I am continuously praying for Donald Trump.
As a Christian, I am required to pray for my enemies. Christ directly told us to in Matthew 5:43-47. Christ rebukes our innermost nature in hating our enemies by reminding us to love on them, and pray for them. It’s easy to hate. It’s easy to only focus on those who are like us. It’s easy to ignore the enemy, hoping they get what’s coming to them. It is much more of a challenge to love and pray for an enemy. I am asking for the Lord’s strength daily in order to do so for Donald Trump. So, I call upon my Christian friends to join me in praying for Trump, yes even today on Super Tuesday when we are hoping for others to win over him in the Republican Primary. Here is my prayer:
I pray the Lord Jesus Christ provides Donald Trump the wisdom he needs. Wisdom not crafted by man, but from the Lord Himself. May he cast aside any of his idols in his life and focus on the One who is called I Am, above all gods. May he not rely upon himself and his wealth first, but lean upon the greater strength of the Lord. May he boldly reject evil as it approaches him, even in the form of those who may support him. May he repent of his past sins, recognize his fallen state as a sinner, and may he come to have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. May the Lord prepare his heart for this change. May He provide Mr. Trump with the Holy Spirit and may it embolden him in the Gospel message over everything else. In Jesus’ holiest of names I pray. Amen.
Please pray for Donald Trump. He, like all of us, needs prayer. He, like all of us, needs Christ. Pray for him to see the need for Christ’s grace and change.
