Welcome to MDMRN.com – the new home of Matthew Newman’s writings on the web. This has been a long time coming, but let’s talk briefly about it.
I began blogging in 2004, specifically in response to a website called “JohnKerryIsADoucheButImVotingForHimAnyway.com” Yes – that was really the website. I was annoyed that a person would spite vote, vote for someone not because they liked them but because they hated someone else. That began the past 12 years of me blogging on various platforms, sites, and formats.
In 2008, when my wife and I moved to Maryland I founded Old Line Elephant as my personal blog to discuss primarily Maryland politics. My plan was to keep it politically focused, but that did not work out. I’m opinionated and I like to share my opinion…whether you’re interested or not. Over time, Old Line Elephant shifted and entered into the spiritual realm. That was never the initial intent, but over time I began to talk more and more openly about faith issues, specifics of my faith, and my thoughts on how that faith impacts what I watch, read, and listen to. It expanded to discussions on implications of different music, movies, manga, and anime have when it came to my faith in Christ Jesus. In mid-2015 I finally just embraced the expanded scope of my site realizing the truth – I am no longer just a political blogger. This is my website about my eclectic tastes, thoughts, interests, and views. This is the culmination of that realization with a new brand, new site, and new path forward.
Some have asked if I’m going to give up the fight for my values politically. Of course not. But my focus isn’t only politics. I’m a person defined by much more than that one aspect of my interests. I never want to lose sight of that and this new website reflects this reality. Some of the archive from the old site has been transferred over, others have not been. Topical commentary has not been, some more classic commentary which is still relevant has been transferred. Wastes of the Week from previous sessions have not. I had to cut things off somewhere…
With all that said, I once more welcome you to MDMRN.com. I hope you enjoy this journey with me.
