“Happy” by Pharrell Williams is a huge hit from late 2013 which was also prominent in the movie Despicable Me 2. The song has topped the Billboard Top 100 for the past nine weeks, so I feel it necessary to come in and comment on the song. The lyrics can be reviewed here. Let’s discuss.
Williams begins by singing, “It might seem crazy what I’m about to say / Sunshine she’s here, you can take a break / I’m a hot air balloon that could go to space / With the air, like I don’t care baby by the way / Because I’m happy.” He begins talking about how he’s happy and, frankly, others may not understand why. Unexplained joy, Williams is feeling and he doesn’t care that others do not seem to understand. At this point, we do not know what the basis of Williams’ joy. What is the reason he is so happy in a way the world does not understand. That said, as a Christian, I have a reason.
My joy is in the Lord (Psalm 16:8-9). When the world keep me down, I can keep maintaining my joy in the Lord knowing He will be my guide (James 1:2-3). Because I have Jesus, I can always be rejoicing (1 Thessalonians 5:16).
In the chorus, Williams states he’s happy over and over again. Explaining his joy exuberantly. The Bible calls us to do this (Psalm 71:23).
In the second verse, Williams continues in the song saying, “Here come bad news talking this and that, yeah, / Well, give me all you got, and don’t hold it back, yeah, / Well, I should probably warn you I’ll be just fine, yeah, / No offense to you, don’t waste your time / Here’s why / Because I’m happy.” The world is trying to keep him down with negativity. The world is trying to keep him down with negative talk, negative behavior. That said, his joy cannot be taken from him. What in the world can provide such joy? The Lord.
In Philippians 4, Paul provides us a famous verse (13) which most people to take as they can do anything. Reading the context paints a better picture which is fitting for the song “Happy.”
I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know both how to have a little, and I know how to have a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.
-Philippians 4:11-13, HCSB
No matter the situation, contentment can be found not in the world, not in another person, not any action you do – but in Christ who will strengthen you through all of life’s troubles. The Lord will provide you that contentment, that internal joy which may never make sense to the world. Christ provides this joy. Christ will make you happy.
Williams then continues on to the bridge saying that nothing can bring him down, nothing can make him sad. No one can take away the joy from Christ knowing He has risen (John 16:22).
While I still don’t know what makes Pharrell Williams so happy, I know what keeps me satisfied, content, and happy – that’s Jesus. He is why I am happy. He’s why the world can try to bring me down, but I will find a way to return to being content.
