The Darkness and the Bubble

Below is a serious piece of fiction based on the introduction to a classic tale of kidnapping, drama, and heroics.

“Ugh,” I groaned as I tried to stand. I was in what felt like a cave. It was dark and the stone walls were striped alternating with red and white. I rubbed the back of my head. The last thing I had remembered was being struck in the head after my girlfriend was kidnapped. My head was still sore from the attack.

I rubbed my eyes with my hands then looked down. “What the,” I cried. I had to do a double take. “What happened to my hands?” I shouted. My hands were pink and scaly with long white claws. What did these monsters do to me? I thought to myself, And where are Bob and our girls.

Then it happened.

A boxy looking robot approached me. It had large eyes and was chomping at the bit to get me. It looked more like a wind-up toy than anything truly frightening, but it kept marching toward me. Faster and faster. I didn’t know what to do so I screamed at the creature. As I screamed, I felt a gurgle in my throat and then as my eyes closed something burst from my mouth. The feeling was like vomiting, but whatever burst forth came right out of my mouth instead of from within. When opened my eyes I saw the robot floating inside a bubble with a blue sheen.

I walked around the bubble and instinctively reached out to pop it with my claw. It exploded suddenly. I ducked to avoid the blow back. When I looked up, there was a pile of bananas on the ground. Weirder and weirder, I thought to myself. I was starving, so I grabbed the bananas. I threw the peels in a seemingly endless hole I found nearby.

I began to yell out to see if anyone else was there with me. I heard an answer to my cries. It was Bob!

“Bob! Bob! Are you there?”

“Yea, Bubba. I hear you, keep yelling, I’ll follow your voice.”

“I’m here, I’m here,” I cried. I could see a figure approaching me through the darkness. As it got closer, I saw what it was. It had Bob’s voice, but this was a scaly green creature with pink arms and long white claws. The arms looked like mine. The creature had yellow spikes starting from the top of it’s head going back toward a tail. I froze in place. As it got closer to me it did the same.

“Bubba?” the creature said.

“Bob?” I replied.

We just stood there, taking it all in. Realizing what we were. We were deformed, lizard-like creatures. We were trapped in a cave, together. Our girls were lost.

Just then, a loud, booming voice as if from nowhere began to speak. It said, “If you would like your women, you must journey through the cave of monsters. Now, is the beginning of your fantastic story.”

We looked at each other then looked ahead. Two more of the robots were marching toward us. We knew what we had to do. We knew the perils we were about to face.

“You ready, Bubba?”

“I’m ready,” I said.

The story was a fantastic one I would never forget.
